ENGINEERING COLLEGE RECEIVES GIFT
FROM STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS
AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State students involved with the annual fall Engineers' Week and spring Career Expo donated $100,000 to the College of Engineering. The donation will be used for engineering student scholarships during the 2002-03 school year.
Students Angie Hefner and Ben Olsen, who are the Engineers' Week co-chairs, and Jennifer Tapke, Engineering Career Expo chair, made the scholarship presentation to engineering dean Jim Melsa, today (Jan. 29).
"Engineering students early on learn the virtues of being team players," said Melsa. "This is an excellent example of team playing. We are grateful for this donation because it will be used to help other engineering students."
The students said continuing economic pressures on students, Iowa State, and the engineering college, make this is a timely gift.
"We decided to take excess funds from each of our groups' budgets and use them to benefit the students in the form of scholarships," said Hefner. "We felt that many students could use some extra help this coming year."
The "Engineers' Week and Engineering Career Expo Scholarship" fund came from employer participation fees for the fall Engineers' Week Career Fair and the spring Career Expo. The Engineering Scholarships and Awards Committee will determine recipients, and scholarship amounts will be based on leadership, involvement and a minimum GPA of 2.5.
