ISU PLANT SCIENTIST RECEIVES NSF PLANT GENOME YOUNG INVESTIGATOR AWARD

AMES, Iowa -- Adam Bogdanove, an assistant professor of plant pathology and a researcher in the Plant Sciences Institute at Iowa State University, has received a Young Investigator Award in Plant Genome Research from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Bogdanove (pronounced Bohg' da noff) is one of eight scientists nationwide to receive the NSF competitive award, which supports the development of future leaders in plant genomics research.

"These awards are important in launching the scientific careers of promising young investigators," said Jane Silverthorne, a program manager at NSF.

Bogdanove received $1.1 million for five years. He will research the functional genomics of rice susceptibility to bacterial diseases. Bogdanove will study the pathogen and host traits that create opportunities for microbes to exploit different plant tissues.

Plant genomic research provides scientific understanding of the structure and function of genomes of plants that are important to agriculture, environmental management, energy and health.

Bogdanove joined the faculty at Iowa State in 2001. He earned his bachelor's degree at Yale University, New Haven, Conn., and his doctoral degree at Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.

The Plant Sciences Institute at Iowa State University is dedicated to becoming one of the world's leading plant science research institutes. More than 200 faculty from the College of Agriculture,

the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the College of Family and Consumer Sciences and the College of Engineering conduct research in nine centers of the institute. They seek fundamental knowledge about plant systems to help feed the growing world population, strengthen human health and nutrition, improve crop quality and yield, foster environmental sustainability and expand the uses of plants for biobased products and bioenergy. The Plant Sciences Institute supports the training of students for exciting career opportunities and promotes new technologies to aid in the economic development of agriculture and industry throughout the state. The institute is supported through public and private funding.
