IOWA STATE FINANCE PROFESSOR TO SERVE IN SEC'S OFFICE OF ECONOMIC ANALYSIS
AMES, Iowa -- An Iowa State University finance professor has been named a Visiting Academic Scholar in the Office of Economic Analysis for the Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, D.C. The appointment is for one year.
Mike Piwowar, assistant professor of finance, began his SEC duties July 29. He will serve as a research resource for the commission's staff and conduct original research for the Chief Economist.
"The Office of Economic Analysis is working on incredibly important research issues in the areas of market microstructure, investment management and corporate finance," Piwowar said. "We also provide support to other areas in the SEC, such as enforcement and market regulation. I look forward to incorporating what I am learning here into my academic research as well as bringing some of my experiences into the classroom."
Piwowar came to Iowa State in 1998 from Penn State University, University Park, where he had been a Ph.D. candidate and instructor/research assistant in the department of finance from 1994 to 1998. From 1993 to 1994, he was an MBA student and research assistant for the Capital Markets Research Center, Georgetown University.
Piwowar researches market microstructure, international equity markets and corporate finance. He teaches courses in investments and corporate finance at Iowa State.
Piwowar received a B.A. from Penn State University, an MBA from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., and a Ph.D. from Penn State.
Established in 1984, the College of Business is the third largest college at Iowa State with a fall 2001 enrollment of more than 4,000 students. The college is expected to move into its new home, the Gerdin Business Building, in fall 2003. The building project was launched with a $10 million gift from Russ and Ann Gerdin of Coralville.
