DREWES RECEIVES NATIONAL BIOLOGY TEACHING AWARD
AMES, Iowa -- Charles Drewes, an Iowa State University professor of zoology and genetics, is the recipient of a biology teaching award from the Four-Year College Section of the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT).
An Iowa State faculty member since 1974, Drewes is being honored for his "excellence in teaching as well as his unique abilities that inspire others who teach and are engaged in biological research," according to the NABT. Drewes will be presented the award at the annual NABT meeting in November, which will be held in Cincinnati.
Since 1993, Drewes has led residential, hands-on workshops for biology teachers (middle school through community college) in invertebrate biology at the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory, Milford, Iowa. He has also regularly presented new ideas for laboratory investigations to biology teachers in hands-on workshops at NABT and Association for Biology Laboratory Education meetings.
"Such efforts have led me to believe that meaningful interaction of teachers and their students with a wide range of living, behaving organisms not only enhances their biology education in general, but, ultimately, is crucial for promoting ecological awareness and preserving biodiversity," Drewes said.
