Veishea, the university's annual student-run spring celebration, turns 80 this year. To commemorate the event, a historical sign will be installed on central campus. The sign will be unveiled at Veishea 2002 opening ceremonies on Friday, April 19. Last year, the university installed 16 historical signs across campus. The signs inform visitors, new students and the campus community about significant accomplishments of national or international importance that occurred on campus. The Veishea sign will be captioned "Largest Student-Organized Festival" and will read: "Veishea, founded in 1922, is the nation's largest student-run celebration. The name is an acronym for the five colleges at Iowa State in 1922 Veterinary Medicine, Engineering, Industrial Science, Home Economics and Agriculture. Each spring, Veishea attracts thousands of people to campus for student performances, cherry pies, a huge parade featuring student-built floats, and open houses sponsored by academic units and student clubs." The subjects of the first 16 signs were suggested by Iowa State colleges and other units.
