ISU STUDENT HEALTH CENTER TO BE NAMED FOR THIELEN SEPT. 29

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University's Student Health Center will be officially named for Thomas B. Thielen, vice president emeritus for student affairs, at a ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 29.

The Thomas B. Thielen Student Health Center naming will begin at 10 a.m. at the facility on the corner of Sheldon Avenue and Union Drive. It is open to the public.

Thielen, ISU president Gregory Geoffroy, Board of Regents, State of Iowa, president Owen Newlin and health center director James Nelson will speak at the ceremony. Brooke Johnson, an Iowa State student and president of the Health Center Student Advisory Committee, will present Thielen with a gift and make brief comments. Thomas Hill, vice president for student affairs, will open and close the ceremony. Refreshments and tours of the facility will be available.

"Tom Thielen's legacy of student involvement and leadership at Iowa State is tremendous," said Hill. "Naming the Student Health Center in his honor is a tribute to his dedication to students and two decades of service to the university."

Thielen served as vice president for student affairs at Iowa State from 1977 to 1997. During his tenure, Thielen worked closely with student leaders to create a new student health center. The Government of the Student Body has endorsed the naming of the building for Thielen.

The facility, funded with student fees and dedicated in October 1997, gave the health center three times more space and put all clinical services on the same floor. Along with general medical services, the center offers orthopedics, psychiatry, allergy and travel clinics, physical therapy at Cyclone Sports Medicine, pharmacy, laboratory and X-ray services. Free nutrition counseling with a registered dietitian, fitness assessments, and time/stress management counseling are among the education programs offered to students. The student health center also is a sponsor of First Nurse, which gives students 24-hour access to medical advice.

Prior to coming to Iowa State, Thielen was vice provost for student affairs at the University of Minnesota, Duluth, from 1973 to 1976 and dean of student services at the University of Maine from 1970 to 1973.

Thielen, the son of Bernie and Bernice Thielen, was born and raised in Exira. He taught and served as an assistant coach for several sports in Blue Earth, Minn., from 1958 to 1963. He is married to Evelyn Rauenhorst, of Easton, Minn.
