This is the third year of the LAS Master Teacher program, which recognizes special efforts to enhance student learning. This year's awards recognize individuals who have been successful in involving Iowa State undergraduates in research. The LAS Master Teachers are Paul Canfield, professor of physics and astronomy; Jeffrey Prater, professor of music; Valerie Sheares, assistant professor of chemistry; and David Wallace, associate professor of English. The four will plan teaching methods seminars and in-class demonstrations throughout the academic year. Canfield involves undergraduates in all areas of his research and has served as a mentor for the ISU Honors Program since 1997. Many of his students have published papers in academic journals. Prater's music students assist him with his work as a composer, researcher and teacher. As part of his research program in pedagogy of music theory, Prater has taught 10 undergraduate seminars, "Analysis for Performance." In these seminars, small student groups come together to study and analyze musical works. Sheares has mentored 14 undergraduates and two high school students in her five years at Iowa State. She takes many of her undergraduate researchers to national American Chemical Society meetings, where they give poster presentations. Wallace has worked with undergraduate students as part of his research about diversity, identity and literacy for 10 years. A former undergraduate student and Wallace designed and conducted a set of case studies that examined what it's like to be black on a predominately white university.
