ISU ALUMNA ALLISON ENGEL TO SERVE AS HILTON CHAIR

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University alumna and freelance journalist Allison Engel will serve as the ISU College of Family and Consumer Sciences' 2001-2002 Dean Helen LeBaron Hilton Chair.

Engel was the first Hilton Chair in 1995. The Hilton Chair was endowed by a gift of more than $1.3 million from the estate of Helen LeBaron Hilton, who served as dean of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences from 1952-1975.

Engel, who was named Outstanding Young Alumnas of Iowa State in 1985, has received numerous journalism awards and was a Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford University in 1979. Engel, who currently lives in California, will be at Iowa State on Sept. 24 and will visit campus several times during the academic year.

"I am very much looking forward to working with such an accomplished journalist," said Carol Meeks, dean of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences. "This is a fantastic opportunity for the college -- tapping into the energy of a nationally-connected media resource -- to help us communicate the impact our programs have on families and consumers across the nation and around the world."

Since her first experience as Hilton Chair, Engel has written for various Meredith Corporation, Des Moines, publications and "Saveur" magazine. She also has written a food column for "The Iowan" magazine.

Engel served as a speechwriter and staff member to Iowa Lt. Gov. Sally Pederson. She also produced segments for the Food Network based on "Food Finds: America's Best Local Foods and the People Who Produce Them," a book Engel co-wrote with her sister, Margaret. HarperCollins recently published the 3rd edition of "Food Finds."

Other Hilton Chairs include Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, University of Chicago, on family life and creativity; Frank D. Gunstone, St. Andrews University in Scotland, food science; Louis E. Grivetti, University of California, Davis, on nutrition; Shirley Zimmerman, University of Minnesota, on family policy; Betty Sue Flowers, University of Texas, on scenario building and transformation; and James A. Autry, Meredith Corporation, on leadership for change.
