ISU DESIGN STUDENTS CREATE ART WITH A STEAMROLLER

AMES, Iowa -- A printmaking project will have Iowa State University students pulling out the heavy machinery on Friday, Oct. 19.

Students will create large-scale prints with the use of a steamroller.

The students -- some in teams, some working individually -- will make woodblocks by carving designs on 4-ft. by 8-ft. pieces of plywood. On Friday, the students will create prints from the woodblocks using a steamroller at Rueter's, a construction and equipment dealer at 5815 W. Lincoln Way. The steamroller printmaking will begin at approximately 12:15 p.m. and last until 5 p.m.

April Katz, assistant professor of art and design who teaches the printmaking course, is overseeing the project.

The students will lay the cut blocks on the ground and roll them with paint. A large sheet of paper will be laid over each block. The paper will then be covered with a canvas blanket. Another piece of wood will be placed atop the canvas. Students will drive the steamroller over their print blocks to create relief prints.

"The goal is to teach students how to work with large-scale imagery, and to show them alternative ways of making art," said Katz.

There will be eight woodblocks created for the project by Katz' students and members of the University Print Society.
