YOUTH SPORT EXPERT IS PEASE FAMILY
SCHOLAR AT IOWA STATE, LECTURE IS OCT. 18
AMES, Iowa -- Maureen Weiss, a professor and director of the sport and exercise psychology department in the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, is the fall Pease Family Scholar in Iowa State University's College of Education. She will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, in Room 279 of the Forker Building. The event is free and open to the public.
Weiss is a well-known scholar on the psychological and social development of children and adolescents through sports and physical activity. Her research focuses on the areas of self-perception, motivation, observational learning, moral development and the influence of parents, peers and coaches on youth participation.
From 1982 to 1987, Weiss was the director of the Children's Summer Sports Program at the University of Oregon, Eugene, where she was also a professor of sport and exercise psychology. That program emphasized developmental skills for youth aged 5 13.
She is past-president of the Association for the Advancement of Applied Sport Psychology and is the associate editor of the Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology. She has also been editor-in-chief of Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport.
While on campus, Weiss will visit Iowa State health and human performance classes and work with graduate students in the program.
The Pease Family Scholar Fund was created in memory of Harvey and Bomell Pease, who lived in Newport Beach, Calif. They died in 1990 and 1991, respectively. The endowment was established in 1991 by their son, the late Dr. Dean A. Pease, and his wife, Sally, to bring visiting scholars to campus. Dean Pease chaired Iowa State's department of health and human performance from 1987 to1990.
For more information, contact Jerry Thomas, professor and chair of the health and human performance department, at (515) 294-8009.
