COPING WITH TRAGEDY THROUGH THE ARTS EVENT AT ISU
AMES, Iowa -- An arts event to help people cope with the aftermath of the terrorist attacks will be at Iowa State University on Thursday, Oct. 25.
The event, called "Threnody for Tuesday" will be from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. in front of Parks Library on the ISU campus. It is sponsored by ISU Theatre and the ISU dance program. "Threnody" refers to a song of lament or an elegy.
People can pay tribute to victims of the attacks by writing a narrative or painting a picture on 3''x 8" strips of fabric. These strips will be sewn together to create an installation art piece that will be displayed in the lobby of the Fisher Theater, where ISU Theatre holds is performances.
People also can label a helium balloon with the name of one of the heroes of Sept. 11. The balloons will be released at noon on the final strike of the campanile. Iowa State dancers will perform "Aiding the Ascension of the Spirit" during a moment of silence from the time the campanile begins the noon hour chimes until the 12th strike.
"We hope 'Threnody for Tuesday' will be an important healing process for those searching for a way to cope after such a tragic moment in the lives of Americans," said Shirley Basfield Dunlap, associate professor of theater. "All are welcome to participate in this elegy."
