ACKERMANN NAMED ENDOWED CHAIR IN VETERINARY MEDICINE

AMES, Iowa -- Mark Ackermann has been named the John G. Salsbury Chair in Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University. Ackermann is associate professor of veterinary pathology.

"We're proud to recognize Dr. Ackermann's accomplishments by appointing him to fill the Salsbury Chair," said Norman Cheville, veterinary medicine dean. "With the prestige and support linked to this chair, Dr. Ackermann's work will advance understanding of respiratory diseases in cattle and sheep, and bring added recognition to veterinary medicine at Iowa State."

The three-year appointment includes additional resources for research, enabling Ackermann and his team to conduct extensive studies on bovine respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a common cause of pneumonia in cattle and sheep.

Ackermann earned his D.V.M. (1986) and Ph.D. (1989) from Iowa State. Prior to joining the ISU faculty in 1996, he was a scientist at the USDA National Animal Disease Center in Ames for eight years. Ackermann is a board certified veterinary pathologist.

Ackermann's research has led to improved understanding of acute inflammatory response and innate immunity during pneumonia in animals. He has won awards from USDA for technology transfer and from Pfizer Inc., for research excellence.

The John G. Salsbury Chair is named for a leader in veterinary biologics who graduated from Iowa State in 1940. Now retired, Salsbury served as president and chairman of Salsbury Laboratories, Charles City, Iowa.
