IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY AWARDED $470,000
GRANT FOR SCHOOL FOOD SAFETY RESEARCH
AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University's College of Family and Consumer Sciences has been awarded a $470,000 grant for a school food safety effort.
The hotel, restaurant and institution management (HRIM) program received the three-year grant from the USDA and Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service to develop a school mentoring program to ensure food safety and preparation.
Jeannie Sneed, associate professor of HRIM, and Daniel Henroid, temporary instructor in HRIM, will work with Iowa school district food service directors to identify and standardize Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) instruction.
They will hold a national focus group and surveys with school food service directors.
"The goal of the program is to increase the number of school districts -- especially participating Iowa schools -- to have comprehensive HACCP programs," says Sneed.
Goals include improving knowledge of food safety and handling for school food service employees and developing HACCP training materials.
