PARTICIPANTS ARE BEING SOUGHT FOR A POVERTY SIMULATION EXERCISE AT IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY
AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University's College of Family and Consumer Sciences Families Extension will sponsor the ROWEL (Reform Organization of Welfare) Poverty Simulation on Tuesday, April 10, from 5:30 p.m. - 9 p.m. in MacKay Auditorium. The simulation needs 35 to 85 participants. The cost of the event is $8 per person, $4 for students. Discussion will follow the exercise. The web site for the event is
http://www.extension.iastate.edu/cyfar/poverty/
.
During the simulation, participants will assume the roles of families living in poverty, said Diana Broshar, extension program specialist and ROWEL coordinator. There will be four 15-minute sessions. Each session will represent a week in which a participant will have to provide for a family and maintain a home. Participants interact with community "staffers" who will be portrayed by people who have lived in poverty.
A light dinner is part of the simulation. Each participant will be given $1.50 in play money to purchase food from a buffet. The money represents the amount a low-income family spends per person for their main meal of the day.
Registrations are being accepted until Wednesday, April 4. To sign-up, contact Broshar at 294-8204 or use the online registration form and follow the instructions. The event needs at least 35 participants to be held.
