TEAM NUTRITION PROJECT IS FOCUS OF IOWA STATE'S BUFFALO CENTER VISIT MARCH 26

AMES, Iowa — Iowa State University officials will visit Buffalo Center on Monday, March 26, as part of the university's "Strengthening families to become the best" celebration. The celebration focuses on Iowa State's efforts to strengthen family units and individual family members through education, outreach and research.

Richard Seagrave, interim president of Iowa State University, and other university visitors will attend a Team Nutrition presentation and a North Iowa School Cultural Food Fair at 2 p.m. Team Nutrition is a school curriculum that focuses on improving the health and health education of children and their families.

At 3 p.m., students will present information on several extension programs in the area. Some of the programs to be highlighted by the students include "Farm Family Fun Night," the "Boomerangs" student respect program and "Grow Nutrition" lessons. Both of these events are free and open to the public.

"Buffalo Center's concern about the nutrition and welfare of their youth prompted school staff to apply for the Team Nutrition grant," said Carol Peterson, Winnebago County extension education director. "Team Nutrition encompasses the total community and involves everyone to help youth see the need for good nutrition and healthy life style. It is a very appropriate way for the community to address this concern and extension is happy to be a part of this effort in Buffalo Center."

The visit will begin at 10:45 a.m. with a tour of the Hanson Family Life Child Care Center in Forest City. Iowa State Extension played a significant role in the founding and continuing activities of the center. This event is by invitation only.

The Iowa State host family, Harlan and Amy Asmus, will join the visitors for lunch at The Lodge in Forest City at 11:45 a.m. Also invited are area Iowa State alumni, community leaders and educators. Interim president Seagrave will address the gathering. The Asmus family will attend most of the day's events with the ISU visitors.

Following the events at the North Iowa School, an alumni reception will be hosted at the Heiman House, 518 N. Main, in Buffalo Center from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. The College of Family and Consumer Sciences hosts the reception.

Buffalo Center Mayor Reinert Levik will also proclaim March 26 as "Iowa State University Strengthening Families Day" at the reception.
