'CHALLENGING STUDENTS TO BECOME THEIR BEST' IS ISU 2001 THEME
AMES, Iowa -- A celebration built around the theme "Challenging students to become their best," will highlight the 2001-02 school year at Iowa State University.
"Iowa State has a lot to be proud of in terms of the accomplishments of our student body and the services the university provides for them," said Thomas Hill, vice president for student affairs and a co-chair for the celebration. "From the Hixson Opportunity Awards to our very successful learning communities, we are challenging students to become their best. More importantly, Iowa State students are stepping up to meet the challenge."
Benjamin Allen, incoming interim vice president for external affairs, and Andy Tofilon, president of the Government of the Student Body, also are co-chairs.
"Students have always played a key role in university celebrations. It is great that we are the focus of it this year," said Tofilon.
The year-long celebration will include lectures, community visits, building dedications and special events. Theme-related lecture events include Nobel Peace Prize winner Lech Walesa speaking on leadership; Julie Stoffer and Justin Deabler, two former cast members of MTV's "Real World" program; comedian and former Iowa State student Jake Johannsen; and a lecture series on the music business that will feature rap artist Chuck D.
Several events surrounding student-related buildings also are slated, including a groundbreaking for the new College of Business building. The newly remodeled Student Answer Center in Beardshear Hall will open.
The celebration also will go beyond campus. Iowa State's display at the Iowa State fair will feature re-creations of two residence hall rooms -- one from the 1960s and another from the present. "Challenging students to become their best" also will be the theme of community visits during the 2001 academic year.
Iowa State has had several theme-related celebrations. Previous themes have focused on the accomplishments of Iowa State graduate and famed scientist George Washington Carver, Iowa State's technological accomplishments, and the university's support of Iowa families.
