ISU ANNOUNCES SPONSORED PROGRAMS DIRECTOR

AMES, Iowa -- Thane Peterson, director of the Office of Sponsored and Clinical Research of Iowa Health System in Des Moines, has been named director of the Iowa State University Office of Sponsored Programs Administration. The appointment is effective July 23, 2001.

The director provides oversight, management and promotion of sponsored funding for Iowa State's research, instructional, outreach and administrative activities.

Peterson has been with the Iowa Health System since 1996, serving as the director of the Office of Sponsored and Clinical Research since January of 2000 and as director of administration of the Human Gene Therapy Research Institute (1996-1999). Prior to this, he was associate director, acting director and director of research administration at Evanston Northwestern Healthcare Research Institute (1995-1996) in Evanston, Illinois. He was assistant director in the sponsored programs office at Wright State University (1993-1995). He served in several roles in Iowa State's Contracts and Grants Office from 1989-1993. Peterson received an A.S. from Des Moines Area Community College in 1987 and a B.B.A. in finance from Iowa State in 1990.

Val Kettner was serving as acting director of the Office of Sponsored Programs Administration. She is leaving Iowa State to become assistant vice president sponsored funding administration at North Dakota State University, Fargo.

We are very pleased that Thane will be returning to Iowa State in this new role. He brings a great deal of experience in sponsored programs administration and a good understanding of our campus, said James Bloedel, vice provost for research and advanced studies. I would also like to thank Val Kettner for all of her efforts in leading the Office of Sponsored Programs Administration during the past couple of years.
