ISU SETS RECORD IN SPONSORED FUNDING

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University received $217.7 million in sponsored funding during fiscal year 2001, a record high. This is an increase of 3 percent over the $211.2 million Iowa State received last year.

The $217.7 million includes all contracts, grants and gifts received directly by Iowa State for research, public service/extension activities, educational projects, student financial aid, buildings and equipment. Sponsored research funding alone was $133.3 million, also a record for Iowa State.

"We are very pleased with ISU's sponsored funding record this past year," said Jim Bloedel, vice provost for research and advanced studies. "Our success is due to the efforts of many, very talented researchers on our campus, as well as the support network that assists in processing proposals, implementation and monitoring of awards."

Within the $217.7 million total, Bloedel said, funding is up in all three major categories based on competitive awards and federal initiatives. Research funding increased by 11 percent; public service/extension was up 29 percent; and education increased 11 percent. Overall, funding for these three major categories increased by 14 percent.

"As a result, many new and exciting projects are underway that often provide graduate and undergraduate students with experiences that enrich their educational programs," Bloedel said. One example is a recent $2.6 million grant from the National Science Foundation that will provide support and training for ISU students in the cutting edge field of information assurance and computer security.

Sources of sponsored funding at ISU in FY01 included various agencies within the federal, state and local governments; businesses and commodity groups; foundations and associations; and other universities. Major federal supporters of Iowa State include the Department of Agriculture ($39.3 million), the Department of Energy ($29.5 million, primarily in support of the Ames Laboratory), the National Science Foundation ($16.8 million), the Department of Education ($13.9 million), and the Department of Health and Human Services ($11.4 million).

In addition, some $27.8 million came from state and local government; $25.6 million from businesses and commodity groups; and $24.9 million from foundations and associations, Bloedel added.
