SMOOTH SAILING FOR TEAM PRISUM IN DAY 6 OF ASC
AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University's solar car team, Team PrISUm, had
plenty of sunshine in the sixth day of the American Solar Challenge. The team
drove its Odyssey car from Amarillo, Texas, to just west of Santa Rosa,
N.M., a distance of approximately 180 miles. Santa Rosa is about 100 miles
east of Albuquerque.
"We had a good day. We covered a lot of ground even though we had to do it
at a slower pace than we anticipated," said Nick Mohr, director of Team
PrISUm. "It looks like we fixed the suspension problems we encountered
yesterday. Tomorrow we want to travel up to 250 miles, making it to Gallup,
N.M., by the end of the race day."
Mohr said team spirits are high, even though they are in the middle pack of
solar racers. Lead teams in the ASC (University of Michigan, Queens
University, and University Missouri-Rolla) are in Arizona. But that doesn't
deter the Iowa State team, Mohr said.
"We're determined to do the best we can and continue to gain on the teams
ahead of us," Mohr said.

The American Solar Challenge, a 2,300-mile race is being held July 15-25. It
is the longest solar car race ever attempted. The race course will follow
along portions of old Route 66.
The American Solar Challenge is designed to advance renewable energy and
electric vehicle technologies, promote educational and engineering
excellence, encourage environmental consciousness and teach teamwork. This
is the sixth major solar car race Iowa State students have participated in
since 1990.
