TEAM PRISUM REACHES ST. LOUIS IN SECOND DAY OF RACING
AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University's solar car team, Team PrISUm, travelled 130 miles Monday, July 17, reaching St. Louis, in the second day of racing in the American Solar Challenge.

Iowa State's team, which began the day just north of Springfield, Ill., trailered its car from St. Louis to Rolla, Mo., a distance of 107 miles. Rolla is a mandatory overnight stop for all teams.

The American Solar Challenge, a 2,300-mile July 15-25 race, is the longest solar car race ever attempted. The race course will follow along portions of old Route 66.

"We faced some challenges today and our battery power was a little low," said Nick Mohr, director of Team PrISUm. "Rather than drive through St. Louis and eat up significant battery power, we decided it would be smart to preserve the battery power we had and trailer into Rolla so we could start charging the batteries."

The first team to reach the Rolla overnight stop was the University of Missouri-Rolla, followed by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and the University of Toronto.

To view where teams are on the race route go to www.formulasun.org/asc/tracking/index.html. Team PrISUm also is charting its own progress and posting it on their web site at www.prisum.iastate.edu/asc/#map.

The American Solar Challenge is designed to advance renewable energy and electric vehicle technologies, promote educational and engineering excellence, encourage environmental consciousness and teach teamwork. This is the sixth major solar car race Iowa State students have participated in since 1990.
