QUICK LINKS Today's News News releases ISU homepage NEWS RELEASE 07-06-01 Contacts: Debra Sanborn, Hixson Program, (515) 294-0632 Steve Sullivan, News Service, (515) 294-3720 IOWA STUDENTS RECEIVE 2001 HIXSON OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP AMES, Iowa -- One hundred Iowa students from 99 counties have been named recipients of the 2001 Christina Hixson Opportunity Awards at Iowa State University. The Hixson Awards provide $2,500 scholarships renewable for four years. It is the goal of the program to annually award a scholarship to a student in every Iowa county. The Hixson Award program focuses on students who demonstrate the desire and potential to succeed at ISU, but come from challenging personal environments or have extreme financial need. Christina Hixson, a native of Clarinda, is the sole trustee of the Lied Foundation Trust in Las Vegas, Nev. As trustee, she has donated more than $11 million to ISU to create the scholarship program. Since 1995, Iowa State has awarded Hixson scholarships to nearly 700 Iowa high school students. Student retention rates and cumulative grade point averages for Hixson classes have been higher than university and national averages.
