ISU'S STONE TO RECEIVE SILVER STAR FROM BOSWELL
AMES, Iowa Kenneth Stone, Iowa State University professor of
economics, will receive a Silver Star for his service in the U.S. Army from
Iowa Rep. Leonard Boswell on Wednesday, Jan. 17.
Boswell will present the Silver Star to Stone at 11 a.m. in Room 468D Heady
Hall.
As a captain serving during the Vietnam War, Stone was the pilot of the
commanding general's command and control helicopter. He is being honored for
risking his personal safety while engaged in military operations involving
conflict with an insurgent force.
Stone became eligible for the Silver Star on April 1, 1967, but never
actually received it.
"In war time, a lot of paperwork doesn't always get done," he said.
Stone made an inquiry about the medal through Boswell's office. After more
than 30 years, Stone will receive the Silver Star, and be recognized for
other military honors he has received: the Distinguished Flying Cross,
Bronze Star, Air Medal with Numeral 23, Army Commendation Medal, Nation
Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Republic of Vietnam
Campaign Ribbon with Device, Expert Badge with Pistol and Carbine Bars,
Aviator Badge (Senior) and Parachutist Badge.
