CHILD CARE PROVIDER RECOGNITION BANQUET HIGHLIGHTS IOWA STATE OSKALOOSA VISIT JAN. 30
AMES, Iowa Iowa State University officials will visit Oskaloosa on Tuesday, Jan. 30, as part of the university's "Strengthening families to become the best" celebration. The celebration focuses on Iowa State's effort to strengthen family units and individual family members through education, outreach and research.
Richard Seagrave, interim president of Iowa State University, will be one of the keynote speakers at a Child Care Provider Recognition Banquet at the Mahaska ISU Extension Auditorium at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30. This event is by invitation only.
The banquet will recognize participants and sponsors of the Child Care Resource and Referral Project that serves nine counties in Southeast Iowa. The program provides training sessions, materials and one-on-one consultations to child care providers. The project is growing, with 301 providers now enrolled who care for almost 4,350 children.
"We have identified a tremendous need for child care provider training and assistance," said Diane Van Wyngarden, ISU Extension education director for Mahaska County. "In the past year, ISU Extension helped establish 211 new child care home businesses and community centers in this nine-county area. An additional 358 existing child care businesses were strengthened with Extension's provision of trainings, resources and technical assistance."
Also attending the banquet will be the host family for the Iowa State visit to Oskaloosa, Beverly and Lawrence Everett, New Sharon.
Seagrave will also be the featured speaker for the noon Rotary Luncheon at the Peppertree Restaurant. The Rotary has opened the meeting to the public. Seagrave will speak on "Strengthening Iowa's Family." Reservations are required. Please contact Dr. Craig Coen, Oskaloosa Vision Center, (641) 673-4366, for reservations. The cost of the luncheon event is $6.25. Reservations will be accepted until noon, Saturday, Jan. 27.
At 2:30 p.m., Oskaloosa Mayor Tom Reilly will proclaim Jan. 30 as "Iowa State University Strengthening Families Day" at City Hall, 220 South Market St. The event is open to the public.
Iowa State officials will then tour Kids Corner in University Park. The center is one of the participants in the nine-county program. The group will also visit Joyce Reiman, a home-based child care provider. Both of those visits are not open to the public.
An Iowa State University Alumni Association reception will be from 4:30 p.m. 6 p.m. at the Mahaska County Extension Office. Reservations can be made by calling the Extension office, (641) 673-5841.
