CRST INTERNATIONAL ESTABLISHES TRANSPORTATION AND LOGISTICS SCHOLARSHIP

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State University has received a cash gift of $100,000 from CRST International to fund an undergraduate scholarship in transportation and logistics.

Dennis Hyland, vice president of sales and marketing for CRST International, Inc., Cedar Rapids, recently announced the gift establishing the CRST International Scholarship in Transportation and Logistics. Hyland, who received a bachelors degree in 1982 in transportation logistics, said the CRST International Scholarship is an "excellent opportunity to get the CRST name in front of students."

CRST Chairman and CEO John Smith said: "We hire a number of ISU transportation and logistics graduates and I would like to see that continue. Its time to take the relationship to the next level. Becoming more involved with the program will be beneficial to students in the form of scholarship dollars and to CRST through recruitment efforts."

"The CRST International scholarship will be very helpful in attracting students into the field because they will see there are opportunities to receive additional funds," said Michael Crum, professor and chair in logistics, operations, and management information systems. "They will also realize that leading companies in the industry support education and support our program, giving us credibility and stature as a premier logistics program."

Iowa State established a carrier-oriented transportation program shortly after World War II. In the 1970s, the logistics component was added. Today, ISUs transportation and logistics program has approximately 170 undergraduate students, making it one of the largest in the country. During the last 15 years, Iowa States program has consistently ranked third in terms of research output. The program is nationally recognized within the industry as one of the "Big 5" along with Penn State, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Tennessee.

"This is a dynamic time for the College of Business," said ISU Foundation President Tom Mitchell. "Gifts such as this one from CRST are the reason why our College of Business and its students are experiencing such success."

CRST International, Inc. was founded in 1955 by Smiths parents, Herald and Miriam Smith. It is the largest long-haul trucking carrier in Iowa and ranks as one of the top 10 largest in the United States.

The ISU Foundation is the central fund-raising arm for Iowa State, assisting the university by securing and managing private gift support from individuals, corporations and foundations. It recently completed Campaign Destiny: To Become the Best by raising more than $458 million over five years, of which more than $103 million was designated for student financial aid.
