STEWART NAMED DIRECTOR OF ISU DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY
AMES, Iowa -- Jerry Stewart has been appointed director of the Iowa State University Department of Public Safety (DPS), effective Jan. 1. Stewart has served as interim director of DPS since Aug. 15.
"Jerry Stewart has done an outstanding job as interim director and is respected as a police officer and administrator within DPS and by other law enforcement agencies. He is a very capable leader who is committed to providing a safe environment for the university," said Warren Madden, vice president for business and finance.
The Department of Public Safety has 33 certified law enforcement officers and 10 other full-time and 100 part-time employees. DPS provides crime prevention and detection services, and works closely with area law enforcement agencies to provide a safe and secure environment for Iowa State students, faculty, staff and visitors.
Stewart served as associate director of DPS from 1990 until his appointment as interim director. He has been responsible for the patrol, investigative and special operations units, and he managed the lengthy process that led to national accreditation of DPS in March 1998. Prior to joining Iowa State, Stewart served in several roles with the Cedar Falls Police Department. He was a public school teacher in Waterloo and in North Dakota.
Stewart earned a B.S. in secondary education from Dickinson State University, North Dakota, in 1978 and an M.S. in criminal justice from the University of Alabama in 1996.
Stewart replaces former DPS director Loras Jaeger, who resigned in August 2001 to become chief of the Ames Police Department.
