MU VENDING ANNOUNCES PRICE INCREASE
AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University's Memorial Union campus vending operation has increased prices on some items.
Vending customers will notice changes on some vending machine sandwiches and snacks, and on fresh fruit. In addition, canned soda will increase from 65 to 75 cents, the first increase since 1997. There will be no increase on bottled soda.
Higher vending department operating costs have prompted the increases, said Kathy Svec, Memorial Union marketing coordinator. These costs include higher prices from suppliers for product, and the increased cost of wages and health and other insurance.
MU Vending returns revenues to Iowa State by paying a commission on all sales. This commission is used to support general university fund expenditures. In addition, each university department receives a portion of the commission for special projects. Memorial Union profits are used to maintain Union facilities and services.
The vending department last year employed a crew of ISU students for a total of 14,500 hours. These students assist with day-to-day operations in the Design Cafe, Gentle Doctor Cafe, the Dog Wagon and the Hub. Since signing the vending contract in 1996, MU Vending has also contributed to a scholarship fund administered by Thomas Hill, vice president for student affairs.
MU Vending maintains a 24-hour problem line at 294-5648. Customers who encounter problems with the operation of machines, or who find machines empty or low on product are encouraged to call. The MU Vending Office is located in Room 210, Memorial Union. Customers also may e-mail at
