ISU'S CYCHOSZ NAMED TO NATIONAL DRUG AND ALCOHOL PREVENTION EFFORT

AMES, Iowa -- An Iowa State University official has been selected for a national effort to battle drug and alcohol abuse on college campuses.

Charles Cychosz, ISU Department of Public Safety crime prevention research and training manager, has been named an associate of the U.S. Department of Education's Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention. As an associate, Cychosz will be involved in efforts to strengthen alcohol, other drug, and violence prevention on U.S. college campuses.

Cychosz has worked at Iowa State since 1982 and received a PhD from the College of Education in 1994. He is currently the principal investigator for a multi-campus project involving alcohol-related social marketing and alcohol enforcement.

"Center associates have proven to be a powerful way for the center to assist colleges and universities in their prevention efforts," said Beth DeRicco, associate director for Institutions of Higher Education at the center. "They extend our reach into many more communities than we are able to serve alone, and are strong advocates for change within their own community."

The center selects approximately 30 associates every two years. Selection is based on leadership experience and areas of expertise. The Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention is a national resource center for institutions of higher education concerned with reducing alcohol and other drug use. The center offers training, technical assistance, publications, and other information.
