IOWA STATE'S CYTECH CHALLENGE IS APRIL 20

AMES, Iowa -- Students from Iowa and other Midwestern high schools will try to solve a variety of business and computer programming problems at Iowa State University's fourth annual CyTech Challenge on Friday, April 20.

CyTech Challenge, a hands-on problem-solving event developed by Iowa State student organizations, will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at a variety of campus locations.

Participating students will face a variety of challenges involving computer program interface development, Web design and integration, and robot programming. Lego Mindstorms will be used in the robot programming, which also will involve Iowa State's Toying with Technology program. Students also will take a bus tour of campus.

"Iowa State has a well-developed program in the areas of MIS, computer science and computer engineering," said Justin Doyle, director for CyTech Challenge. "We want to showcase those strengths to these students who are on the edge of a tech career."

More than 80 high school students, 35 corporate sponsors, and 30 instructors, chaperones and parents are expected to attend.

"The high school students enjoy the interaction with Iowa State students and corporate representatives - they get to see practical applications of what they are learning in the CyTech activities," said Doyle.

Instructors will receive a tour of C-2 Iowa State's Virtual Reality Center, learn about distance education opportunities, and see how Iowa State is integrating the Internet into class work projects.

The CyTech Challenge is co-sponsored by the College of Business, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering. The MIS Club works with the ISU Computer Science Club and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
