ISU'S CATT CENTER ANNOUNCES STRONG-MINDED WOMEN AWARDS
AMES, Iowa -- Five women have been selected to receive the 2001 Strong-Minded Women awards presented annually by Iowa State University's Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics.
The awards have been presented since 1994 to recognize women for making a difference in the lives of their students, in their families, in the community and in the world -- particularly in ways that are innovative, risk-taking or effect change.
The awards will be presented at the Catt Center's annual Strong-Minded Women dinner, awards ceremony and dessert reception to be held at the Scheman Building, Iowa State Center, from 6-9 p.m. on Monday, April 9. The recipients of the Strong Minded Women Award for 2001 are:
Ginny Arthur, associate director for residence life at Iowa State, who will be recognized for her mentoring and creative leadership in the department of residence and nationally;
Laura Hamilton, Ames community volunteer and Iowa State alumna, who will be honored for her leadership of the Friends of International Women;
Katherine Melsa, Ames community volunteer, who will be recognized for her efforts in education, community youth development and access to dental care;
Neema Tyale Mgana, Iowa State pre-medical student, who will be honored for her work on behalf of Tanzanian children affected by the HIV/AIDS crisis; and
Faye P. Whitaker, Iowa State associate provost, who will be recognized for effective teaching, mentoring and advocacy for women on the ISU campus.
