| 9-19-00 Contacts: Gene Deisinger, Department of Public Safety, (515) 294-4428 Steve Sullivan, News Service, (515) 294-3720 PIECE OF ISU'S PETERSEN STATUE FOUND AMES, Iowa -- Tonight's reception for Iowa State University's "Christian Petersen, Sculptor" exhibit will be particularly special. A piece of Petersen's "Ring of Life," which was taken last week in an act of vandalism, was found today (Tuesday, Sept. 19). The Petersen statue, which was a gift to the university from students in the class of 1941, depicts several children playing around a fountain. On Thursday, Sept. 14, the head of one of the children was removed and stolen. The statue is in the lobby of MacKay Hall. On Monday, Sept. 18, ISU's Department of Public Safety received an anonymous tip that the head had been placed in a wastebasket in a LeBaron Hall restroom. DPS officials searched the restroom but the piece was not located. Early Tuesday morning, DPS received a call from a custodian who found the piece in the restroom. The head was apparently placed in the wastebasket sometime after officers had searched the area. The vandalism of the statue still is under investigation. "While we are pleased to have recovered the missing piece, we continue to actively pursue this case and intend to identify the person or persons responsible," said Gene Deisinger, DPS captain. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact DPS at (515) 294-4428. The reception will be from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the Brunnier Gallery in the Scheman Building. It is open to the public. The Petersen exhibit will run through Dec. 31. -30- |
