ISU ANNOUNCES SPONSORED PROGRAMS DIRECTOR CANDIDATES

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State University has announced four candidates for the position of director of the Office of Sponsored Programs Administration.

The candidates are Thane J. Peterson, director of the Central Iowa Health System Office of Sponsored and Clinical Research, Des Moines; Ruth Smith, administrative director of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Research Business Office; Valrey Kettner, interim director of the Iowa State University Office of Sponsored Programs Administration; and Matthew Clark, research administrator in the Syracuse University Office of Sponsored Programs.

The director of the Office of Sponsored Programs Administration provides oversight, management and promotion of sponsored funding for Iowa State's instructional, research, outreach and administrative activities.

All four candidates will visit campus in September and have open forums from 11 a.m. to noon in Room 144 of the Durham Computation Center. The open forum schedule is below.

Peterson
Thane Peterson has been director of the Central Iowa Health System Office of Sponsored and Clinical Research since January. He was director of administration for the Central Iowa Health System Human Gene Therapy Research Institute from December 1996 to December 1999. Prior to this, Peterson served in several administrative positions with the Evanston (Ill.) Northwestern Healthcare Research Institute (1995-96); Wright State University, Dayton, Ohio (1993-1995); and Iowa State University (1989-1993). He received an associate of science degree from the Des Moines Area Community College, Ankeny, in 1987, and a B.S. in business administration from Iowa State in 1990.

Smith
Ruth Smith has been administrative director of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia since January 2000. Prior to this, she was sponsored programs officer and interim director of the Ohio State University Research Foundation Health Sciences Office (1991-1999). She held other positions at Ohio State University, Columbus, (1987-1991). Smith earned a B.S. in business administration from Franklin University, Columbus, in 1988 and a juris doctor from Capital University Law and Graduate Center, Columbus, in 1993.

Kettner
Valrey Kettner has been interim director of the Iowa State University Office of Sponsored Programs Administration since February. She has been an associate director of the office since 1995. Prior to this, Kettner held positions with the Center for Family Research in Rural Mental Health at ISU (1991-1995). She was an associate attorney for a Minneapolis law firm (1988-1991). She received a B.S. in business administration from Mayville State College, North Dakota, in 1985, and a juris doctor from the University of North Dakota School of Law, Grand Forks, in 1988.

Clark
Matthew Clark has been a research administrator with the Syracuse University (New York) office of Sponsored Programs since 1993. Prior to this, he was a technical writer/business analyst for a Rochester, N.Y., company (1992-1993) and a law clerk/legal analyst for several organizations (1989-1992). He received a B.A. in communication/journalism and science communication from St. John Fisher College, Rochester, N.Y., in 1983, and a juris doctor from Syracuse University College of Law in 1991.
