| 9-28-00 Contacts: Dianne Bystrom, Catt Center, (515) 294-3181 Steve Sullivan, News Service, (515) 294-3720 ABC'S CAROLE SIMPSON TO VISIT ISU FOR WOMEN, FAMILY EVENTS AMES, Iowa -- Carole Simpson, the anchor of "World News Sunday" and an Emmy Award winning senior correspondent for ABC News, will visit Iowa State on Thursday, Oct. 5, in conjunction with celebrations of women and families. Simpson, who serves as the 2000 Mary Louise Smith Chair in Women and Politics, will give a public presentation on "Women and Family Issues in Campaign 2000" at 8 p.m. in the Sun Room, Memorial Union. The lecture is free and open to the public. Simpson's visit to Iowa State was scheduled in conjunction with the university's Women's Week and Family Weekend events, as well as ISU's yearlong "Strengthening families to become the best" celebration. Simpson will participate in the Plaza of Heroines Celebration 2000 sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The celebration, in honor of the 3,000 women who have been recognized with bricks in the plaza in front of Carrie Chapman Catt Hall, will begin at 4:30 p.m. Also participating in the celebration will be Peter Rabideau, LAS dean; Dianne Bystrom, Catt Center for Women and Politics director; and Jane Cox, ISU associate professor of theater, who will read from the biographies of women honored in the plaza. Four bricks honoring the Mary Louise Smith chairs, including Simpson, will be unveiled. The event is open to the public. Simpson also will meet informally with Catt Center students. She then will meet with members of the community during a public reception from 7 to 8 p.m. in the South Ballroom, Memorial Union. Simpson has received numerous awards for her reporting on social issues, particularly those involving children and families. She was one of the reporters on the critically acclaimed documentary, "Black and White in America," and anchored three hour-long ABC News Specials on "The Changing American Family," "Public Schools in America" and "Sex and Violence in the Media." Her efforts on behalf of women and minorities include serving as chair of the ABC News Women's Advisory Board, vice chair of the International Women's Medical Foundation, and as a member of the board of directors of the National Commission of Working Women.
