ISU'S PETERSEN STATUE VANDALIZED

AMES, Iowa — Iowa State University's Department of Public Safety is investigating the vandalism of "Ring of Life," a Christian Petersen statue in MacKay Hall.

At approximately 10 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, an on-duty DPS student officer observed that the head to one of the children in the sculpture had been removed. The item was not located in the surrounding area and is presumed to have been taken. At this time, there is no known motive for the damage. Due to the historical and aesthetic significance of this artwork, officials hope that the missing piece will be returned as soon as possible, said Loras Jaeger, DPS director.

"Ring of Life" was a gift to Iowa State from students in the Class of 1941, who raised funds to commission Petersen. It originally was designed as a functioning fountain and installed in the MacKay Hall courtyard. The sculpture suffered vandalism in the 1980s, and in 1991 was moved into MacKay Hall during a conservation project. A replica of the original sculpture was installed in the MacKay Hall courtyard.
