The wildly popular Harry Potter books will be the topic of a roundtable discussion on Monday, Sept. 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union. Kimbra Wilder Gish, a Tennessee librarian and critic of the Harry Potter series, will give a brief presentation on her article, "Hunting Down Harry Potter: An Exploration of Religious Concerns about Children's Literature." A roundtable discussion will follow with Carol Elbert, Ames Public Library Youth Service coordinator; Bernie Hawley, Mitchell Elementary School (Ames) media specialist; and Carol Fuhler, ISU associate professor of curriculum and instruction. Jane Cox, ISU associate professor and director of ISU Theater, will read from the Harry Potter books. The Iowa State University Library and the Ames Public Library will sponsor a Banned Book Week Readathon featuring students, faculty and staff reading from various publications that have faced censorship. Readathon 2000 will be Wednesday, Sept. 27, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Campanile Room of the Memorial Union. Each reading will last approximately five minutes. Readathon 2000 participants and the books they will read from include: Richard Seagrave, interim president of ISU, "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee"; Olivia Madison, dean of Library Services, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn"; Gina Millsap, director of the Ames Public Library, "Where the Sidewalk Ends"; Nathan Ashmore, president of the ISU/ACLU Chapter, "Howl"; Nancy Bevin, ISU Women’s Center coordinator, "To Kill a Mockingbird"; Dianne Bystrom, director of the Catt Center for Women and Politics, "The Handmaid's Tale"; Ben Golding, president of the ISU Government of the Student Body, (selection to be announced); Jeremy Hayes, president of the ISU Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered Ally Alliance, "Daddy's Roommate"; Thomas Hill, vice president for student affairs, "Black Boy"; Jeffery Johnson, president of the ISU Alumni Association, "Nappy Hair"; Barbara Mack, professor of journalism and mass communication, "Lysistrata"; Debra Marquart, assistant professor of English, "Tropic of Cancer"; and Herman Quirmbach, professor of economics, "ISU and the Censorship of Oleomargarine." -30- |
