9-28-00 Contacts: Jerry Thomas, Education, (515) 294-8009 Cathy Curtis, Education, (515) 294-8175 Kevin Brown, News Service, (515) 294-8986 OLYMPIC OFFICIAL IS PEASE FAMILY SCHOLAR AT IOWA STATE, LECTURE IS OCT. 11 AMES, Iowa – Bruce Elliott, chair of the department of human movement studies at the University of Western Australia, Perth, is the fall Pease Family Scholar in Iowa State University’s College of Education. He will speak at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 11, in Room 279 of the Forker Building. The event is free and open to the public. Elliott will speak on movement biomechanics in exercise, sport and physical activity. Elliott is a well-known scholar on biomechanics, which is the study of principles and relations involved in physical activity. He was recently appointed as the Scientific Chair for the 5th International Olympic Committee World Congress on Sport Sciences for the 2000 Sydney Olympics. His Olympic responsibilities include all the high-speed videotaping and analysis showcased at the games. While on campus, Elliott will visit Iowa State health and human performance classes and work with graduate students in the program. His research interests include the biomechanics of hitting, throwing and kicking movements, along with movement patterns. Elliott was the inaugural chair of the Western Australian Institute of Sport (1984-1994) and inaugural vice president (sports science) in the Australian Association of Exercise and Sports Science (1993-1995). He is a fellow of Sports Medicine Australia, the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation and the Australian Institute of Biology. The Pease Family Scholar Fund was created in memory of Harvey and Bomell Pease, who lived in Newport Beach, Calif. They died in 1990 and 1991, respectively. The endowment was established in 1991 by their son, the late Dr. Dean A. Pease, and his wife, Sally, to bring visiting scholars to campus. Dean Pease chaired Iowa State’s department of health and human performance from 1987 to 1990.
