ISU'S 'INSECT HORROR FILM FEST' RETURNS AMES, Iowa – You can watch them, pet them or eat them at Iowa State University's annual Insect Horror Film Festival, Friday, Sept. 15. The event will be from 6 to 10 p.m. in the South Ballroom of the Memorial Union. An insect petting zoo will feature hissing cockroaches, giant millipedes, a butterfly tent and an earwig display. Hissing cockroaches also will be given away, said Erica Simbro, ISU Entomology Club president. The film festival's annual insect tasting event will feature cricket clusters and mealworm dip with crackers. This year's bug flick is "Microcosmos," a documentary about insect life in meadows and ponds. "Microcosmos" will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Woody Hart, professor of entomology, will introduce the film. The documentary uses close-ups, slow motion and time-lapse photography. "Strikingly visual nature documentary using high-powered lenses to record a magical universe that hardly can be seen by the human eye: the world of insects, in which beetles, snails, caterpillars, ladybugs, and dragonflies exist amid grass and vines, dewdrops and poppies. An immensely entertaining, endlessly fascinating visual treat; stunningly photographed and edited," wrote film critic Leonard Maltin about "Microcosmos." The Insect Horror Film Festival is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the ISU Entomology Club, the Student Union Board and the Committee on Lectures (funded by the Government of the Student Body). -30- |
