ISU BRINGS FAMILY CELEBRATION TO DUBUQUE

AMES, Iowa – Richard Seagrave, interim president of Iowa State University, and other university representatives will be part of a community visit to Dubuque on Thursday, Sept. 28.

The visit is part of Iowa State's yearlong "Strengthening families to become the best" celebration. The celebration focuses on Iowa State efforts to strengthen family units and individual family members through education, outreach and research.

The focus of the Dubuque visit will be on neighborhood revitalization programs and ISU programs that have helped area families.

Seagrave will speak about Dubuque's Pathways Affordable To Homeowners (PATH) program at a luncheon with local real estate agents and bankers at the Midway Motor Lodge. Following the luncheon, Seagrave will participate in a special announcement regarding PATH, which provides grants to new homeowners. ISU Extension provides educational programs for new homeowners and financial counseling for grant recipients.

Seagrave and other members of the Iowa State group will take a trolley tour to view Dubuque downtown revitalization, housing and family resource center projects. The trolley tour is scheduled for 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Seagrave also will participate in a Dubuque AmeriCorps ceremony at 4 p.m. in the St. Mark Community Center, 1201 Locust St. New AmeriCorps volunteers will be sworn in at the event. ISU Extension oversees the AmeriCorps program in Dubuque County. AmeriCorps volunteers provide programs for students and their parents.

There will be a reception for Iowa State alumni, families and friends from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Dubuque Museum of Art, 701 Locust St. Iowa State has selected local families to serve as hosts during 2000-2001 community visits. The Mark and Linda Chmelar family of Dubuque will attend the alumni reception. Mark and Linda Chmelar are Iowa State graduates. Mark earned a degree in agricultural engineering from Iowa State in 1979, and Linda earned a degree in home economics education in 1976. The Chmelars have contributed to the well-being of youth in the Dubuque area through their leadership in Boy Scouts and Iowa State University Extension activities. Linda has been a 4-H leader for 17 years and is an elementary school volunteer. The Chmelars have four children – Jessica, Nathan, Brian, and Daniel.

Iowa State admissions officials will be at Dubuque Senior High School in the morning and Dubuque Hempstead high school in the afternoon. Larry Genalo, associate professor of materials science and engineering, will give educational presentations to students in science classes, and Darlene Fratzke, instructor in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, will give presentations to the family and consumer sciences classes in both high schools.
