ISU COLLEGE OF DESIGN DEDICATES NEW AUDITORIUM, OTHER IMPROVEMENTS

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State University's College of Design will dedicate Threshold 2000, a $3 million capital improvement project, on Saturday, Sept. 9.

The dedication ceremony will be at 10 a.m. in the College of Design's new Kocimski Auditorium. Dedication speakers include Owen Newlin, president of the Board of Regents, State of Iowa; Richard Seagrave, interim ISU president; Mark Engelbrecht, design dean; Stacy Cullison, design development officer; and Anna Danneman, design graduate student. Architects and ISU alumni William Chilton and Jon Pickard also will make brief comments. Their firm was among several that contributed to Threshold 2000.

Components of Threshold 2000 include:
  • The 250-seat Karol J. and Lila Furman Kocimski Auditorium. The auditorium was named in honor of the Kocimskis, who left their estate to the College of Design. Karol Kocimski was an ISU professor of architecture for two decades.
  • The Lyle E. Lightfoot Forum, an area in the College of Design atrium that includes the Cyber Cafe, Design Cafe and open study area. It was funded with a portion of a $1 million gift from Lightfoot, a 1945 graduate in architectural engineering.
  • The Florence Kies Fine Arts Studio, a suite of three studios used by design's drawing, painting and printmaking program. It was funded by the estate of Florence Kies.
  • The Cowles Design X.PORT, an "electronic" conference center and distance learning facility funded with a $250,000 gift from the Gardner and Florence Call Cowles Foundation, Des Moines.
  • The LoFT (Laboratories on Forward Technologies), student studios on the fifth floor of the college. A primary component of the LoFT is the Durham Visualization Laboratory.

"Threshold 2000 has created a rich array of new construction, remodeling and technological enhancements that will significantly reinforce the College of Design's academic work and celebrate our unique collegiate culture," Engelbrecht said. "It has also provided the opportunity to forge new, and lasting, bonds between the College of Design and its many friends and alumni."

Financial support for the project came from private resources in the form of gifts to the Campaign Destiny, Iowa State's recently completed $458 million capital campaign, and $1 million of institutional funding.
