| 9-6-00 Contacts: Rollin Richmond, Provost, (515) 294-9591 John McCarroll, University Relations, (515) 294-6137 Teddi Barron, News Service, (515) 294-4778 NORMAN CHEVILLE NAMED INTERIM DEAN OF VETERINARY MEDICINE AMES, Iowa – Norman Cheville, professor and chair of veterinary pathology, will serve as interim dean of the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, effective Oct. 1. Cheville is a leading researcher on bovine brucellosis. He developed a vaccine that was important in eradicating this highly infectious disease. He was one of two researchers selected by the National Academy of Science in 1997 to investigate brucellosis transmission in bison and elk in the Greater Yellowstone Area. Cheville joined the National Animal Disease Center in 1963, serving as research leader and chief of pathology from 1964 to 1989 and research leader for brucellosis from 1989 to 1995. He has served as chair of the veterinary pathology department at Iowa State since 1995. He was interim chair of biomedical sciences from 1997 to 1999. Cheville was elected Distinguished Member of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists in 1999. He has received numerous national recognitions from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and industry for his brucellosis vaccine work. He earned his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin (1964) and his doctor of veterinary medicine from Iowa State (1959). He received an honorary degree from the University of Liege, Belgium, in 1986. Cheville is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and received the Distinguished Scientist Award from the Agricultural Research Service of USDA in 1990. Cheville succeeds Richard Ross, who was named agriculture dean in July. Ross had served as dean of veterinary medicine since 1993. -30- |
