Richard Seagrave, interim president of Iowa State, and other university officials will participate in several events in Des Moines during the community visit, which is part of Iowa State's yearlong "Strengthening families to become the best" celebration. The celebration focuses on Iowa State efforts to strengthen family units and individual family members through education, outreach and research. During the visit, Seagrave will announce a gift to the College of Agriculture from the Iowa Pork Producers that will establish the Lauren Christian Swine Education Endowment. The endowment will promote swine research through fellowship grants, scholarships and program enhancements. The event will be at 5:30 p.m. at the Des Moines Club, 33rd floor, 666 Grand Ave. Christian was a C.F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor in Agriculture and director of the Iowa Pork Industry Center. He died in 1998. Christian was nationally known for his work in swine genetics. The focus of the Des Moines visit is food, nutrition and health initiatives in Central Iowa involving ISU, other local colleges and universities and human service providers. Jan Seagrave, wife of ISU's interim president, and Carol Meeks, dean of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, will visit the Rainbow Recovery Center in Des Moines at 10 a.m. Invited participants will view a food safety and cooking class for adult women living in the center. The Iowa State Alumni Association will host an alumni luncheon at the Hotel Fort Des Moines. Rand Conger, professor of sociology at Iowa State, will be the keynote speaker. He will speak on "Emerging Families: How Family Relationships Develop Across Generations." Younker's senior vice-president of human resources and ISU alumnus, Mark Barkley, will announce a new student scholarship gift to the textiles and clothing department at ISU. The gift will fund five $2,000 undergraduate or graduate scholarships. At 2 p.m., interim president Seagrave will participate in a discussion of health and nutrition issues at the Commodity Supplement Food Site office in Des Moines. About 60 invited participants from area colleges and universities, along with human services providers, will discuss the Healthy Iowans 2010 initiative. Topics to be discussed include child-care health, food safety and cross cultural health. -30- |
