| 10-9-00 Contacts: Cigdem Akkurt, Art and Design, (515) 294-8978 Steve Sullivan, News Service, (515) 294-3720 LARGE SCALE CHESS SETS TO FILL ISU DESIGN ATRIUM AMES, Iowa -- Kings and pawns will fill the atrium of Iowa State's College of Design on Wednesday, Oct. 11. Interior design students of Cigdem Akkurt, associate professor of art and design, will create large-scale chess sets in historic styles, including post modern and art deco. There will be four boards. Eight student teams will play against teams of faculty and administrators. The display and tournament will be from 1 to 5 p.m. The chess sets will be built mostly from cardboard, paper and particle board. The students were urged to use recycled materials. "The challenge for the students is to design large-scale chess sets using non-literal interpretations of different historical periods and styles," said Akkurt. The Chess Club of Ames/ISU will act as consultants and referees during the tournament. The sets will be donated to local elementary schools where Chess Club of Ames/ISU teaches chess to students. -30- |
