Hadassah is the largest Jewish women's philanthropy group in the nation. Past recipients of the Wreath Award include playwright Wendy Wasserstein, former United Nations Ambassador Jeanne Kirkpatrick and former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo. Recipients are honored for their professional accomplishments and efforts to effect positive change in the world. Kupfer was honored for her contributions as a writer and journalist. Kupfer is the author of "Before and After Zachariah," which was about family life with her severely handicapped son. Kupfer came to the attention of the Nassau Region of Hadassah through her column in Newsday, a New York City area paper with a circulation of nearly 1 million. Originally from Long Island, Kupfer has written a regular column on mothering for Newsday since 1993. Some of the issues she has addressed in her column include abortion, foster care, rights of the disabled, gun control, gay rights and racism. "It's important for people to do what they do well and what I do well is speak and write," Kupfer said. "I just write and speak about issues that I believe in and care about." Kupfer is the author of four books. Her fiction and short essays have appeared in popular journals and magazines including Parents, Women's Review of Books and Newsweek. -30-
