11-15-00 Contacts: Barbara Lograsso, Program for Women in Science and Engineering, (515) 294-4317 Skip Derra, News Service, (515) 294-4917 PROGRAM INTRODUCES MOMS AND DAUGHTERS TO ENGINEERING AMES, Iowa -- "Engineering 101 for mothers and daughters" is a pilot project sponsored by Iowa State's Program for Women in Science and Engineering (PWSE). The one day, hands-on seminar will show young women and their mothers what engineering careers can offer. The first Engineering 101 session will be Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001. It will be held in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union at Iowa State. "We want Engineering 101 to spark an interest in pursuing a career in engineering," said Barbara Lograsso, PWSE's assistant director. "Getting a mom and daughter involved means the child not only will see the career possibilities, but also possibly have a crucial supporter in her endeavor." The seminar will include workshops in career exploration, a look at non-traditional career options and the skills needed to empower and encourage young women in engineering. Hands-on activities include work with computers, drafting and design, and biomedical experimentation. A course fee of $20 per person includes lunch and materials for the seminar.
