The event is at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, in MacKay Hall auditorium. Diana Broshar, extension program specialist, will present the Reform Organization of Welfare (ROWEL) Education Association of Missouri poverty simulation, a nationally recognized program. The simulation is used to expose people to the problems and challenges faced by the poor. Participants will assume the role of up to 26 different "families" living in poverty. The simulation will involve each "family" providing for their basic necessities and shelter. Long-term trends show that more children and their families are living in poverty, said Broshar. In 1994, 21 percent of all children in the United States and 13 percent of Iowa children 18 or younger were considered poor. "Many participants have been surprised that the program replicates the frustrations and stresses of being poor," she said. The simulation is free and open to the public.
