Seven Iowa institutions -- Drake University, Grand View College, Simpson College, Des Moines Area Community College, UNI, UI and ISU -- will combine expertise and resources to create the Des Moines Higher Education Center. The Center will be located in downtown Des Moines, though a location has not yet been selected. The Center is scheduled to open in fall 2000. The goal of the Des Moines Higher Education Center will be to more effectively and efficiently serve the education needs of the greater Des Moines community. The participating institutions will offer individual courses and programs at the center, while seeking opportunities for collaboration. Initially, the seven institutions will offer selected credit and non-credit graduate and undergraduate courses at the center. Students seeking a course or program offered by one of the seven institutions will register with the appropriate institution through a centralized registration process available at the Des Moines Higher Education Center. Transfers of credit between and among the seven institutions will be done through various articulation agreements. The center will be staffed by the three Regents universities, Drake, Grand View, Simpson and DMACC. A management committee consisting of the presidents from the seven institutions will oversee the Center. Iowa State will chair the management committee for the first two years. An advisory committee consisting of representatives from Des Moines area businesses, education, politics and community leadership has been created to assist in the management and development of the center. A search for a director of the Des Moines Higher Education Center has been launched. The cost of the center, including a full-time director and facilities rent, will be shared equally by the seven institutions. While a location has not been chosen yet, the Des Moines Higher Education Center will feature classroom, study and administrative space in a technologically advanced instructional and learning environment. -30- |
