The lecture will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 6, in Room 124 of Kildee Hall. His topic is "Candleworks – Iowa’s Shining Example of Sustainable Commerce." The event is co-sponsored by the Murray Bacon Center for Business Ethics, ISU Extension Value-Added Agriculture and the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture. Richards’ firm makes candles from environmental friendly soy wax, instead of traditional paraffin wax. Paraffin is a waste product from gasoline refining. Studies have shown that paraffin candles release carcinogens when burned. Candleworks’ niche product is sold internationally. Candleworks’ employees are local residents with physical and mental disabilities, new immigrants, homeless people, and people with arrest records. "We try to find the ability within the disability," said Richards. The Murray G. Bacon Center for Ethics in Business was created in 1993. The center’s mission is to help Iowa State students and Iowa firms understand ethical dilemmas in the business world. It is a joint effort of the College of Business, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the department of philosophy.
