| 6-12-00 Contact: Steve Sullivan, News Service, (515) 294-3720 IOWA STUDENTS RECEIVE 2000 HIXSON OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP AMES, Iowa -- Ninety-seven Iowa students from 96 counties have been named recipients of the 2000 Christina Hixson Opportunity Awards at Iowa State University. The Hixson Awards provide $2,500 scholarships renewable for four years. It is the goal of the program to annually award a scholarship to a student in every Iowa county. The Hixson Award program focuses on students who demonstrate the desire and potential to succeed at ISU, but come from challenging personal environments or have extreme financial need. Christina Hixson, a native of Clarinda, is the sole trustee of the Lied Foundation Trust in Las Vegas, Nev. As trustee, she has donated more than $10 million to ISU to create the scholarship program. Since 1995, Iowa State has awarded Hixson scholarships to nearly 600 Iowa high school students. Student retention rates and cumulative grade point averages for Hixson classes have been higher than university and national averages.
