WOI RADIO NOW IS WEBSTREAMING

AMES, Iowa – WOI Radio, the central Iowa National Public Radio affiliate located at Iowa State University, is now Web streaming its broadcasts.

The Web streaming service can be accessed through the WOI Web site, http://www.woi.org. Windows Media Player, needed to listen to the streamed broadcasts, may be downloaded from WOI's Web site.

"We've been working on this service for a long time," said William McGinley, station manager. "Increasing numbers of former Iowans who miss WOI broadcasts and ISU alums around the world have been asking for us to get WOI on the Web."

WOI's streaming was made possible through a partnership arrangement with National Public Radio and ACTIVATE.NET Corporation, a leading Internet audio/video streaming enterprise located in Seattle, Wash.

The streaming feature is part of an enhanced WOI Radio Web site, McGinley said. The site also features links to information pages on locally produced programs, such as "Book Club" and "Talk of Iowa"; an NPR news "ticker" displaying up-to-the-minute news headlines; a national chat room with newsmakers; a special arts news section; and a public radio-oriented, on-line store that benefits WOI in part with its sales.

"We'll be working to improve our Web streaming as time goes on. Our next step will be to establish an archival feature that will enable folks to retrieve selected programs once they have been broadcast and Web streamed," McGinley said.
