ISU ANNOUNCES SPONSORED PROGRAMS DIRECTOR

AMES, Iowa – Matthew Clark, research administrator in the Syracuse University Office of Sponsored Programs, has been named director of the Iowa State University Office of Sponsored Programs Administration. The appointment is effective Jan. 16, 2001.

The director of the Office of Sponsored Programs Administration provides oversight, management and promotion of sponsored funding for Iowa State's instructional, research, outreach and administrative activities.

"Matt Clark brings a combination of experience in grant administration and legal expertise that will be invaluable for carrying out the responsibilities of this position," said James Bloedel, vice provost for research and advanced studies. "He also will interface extremely well with other aspects of the university's administration, as well as members of the faculty."

Clark has been a research administrator with the Syracuse University (New York) office of Sponsored Programs since 1993. Prior to this, he was a technical writer/business analyst for a Rochester, N.Y., company (1992-1993) and a law clerk/legal analyst for several organizations (1989-1992). He received a B.A. in communication/journalism and science communication from St. John Fisher College, Rochester, N.Y., in 1983, and a juris doctor from Syracuse University College of Law in 1991.

Val Kettner has been serving as the interim director of contracts and grants office since Feb. 1.

"Val Kettner supervised this operation through an incredibly difficult period in which it was necessary to process a very large number of grants with a significantly understaffed office. Despite this circumstance, she was able to maintain an exceptionally high quality of output during this time. This could not have been accomplished without her," said Bloedel.

"We are very appreciative of Val's contributions as interim director. She has made major improvements in the processing of grants and contracts, has assisted with the compliance issues, and has helped increase indirect cost recovery", said Prem Paul, associate vice provost for research.
