Through a bidding process, Iowa Prison Industries has, over a three-year-period, built and installed furniture for Iowa State residence halls, including last year's newly remodeled Maple Hall and the new Hawthorn Court complex. Iowa Prison Industries and university officials, as well as other invited state officials, will be on hand for a brief program at 9 a.m. at Hawthorn Court. After the program, there will be a tour of an unoccupied Hawthorn Court building furnished with items made by Iowa Prison Industries. This year, Iowa Prison Industries has done more than 160,000 hours of work for Iowa State, which is more than all Iowa schools and universities combined, said Roger Baysden, director of Iowa Prison Industries. "On Thursday we want to recognize Iowa State's willingness to partner with Iowa Prison Industries, and the trust the university has in us to produce quality furniture," said Baysden. Furniture built by Iowa Prison Industries is brought to campus and moved into university buildings by Iowa prison inmates. The inmates are all first-time, low-level offenders who are due for release in four to five months. -30- |
